WHAT HAPPENS AS WE GROW? – ACTIVE START

As a parent you realize quickly that you are the primary caregiver and a child’s earliest support system – whether you realize it or not you are their first coach.  Like anything else in your child’s life it is important that we as parent’s educate ourselves as much as possible about Long Term Physical Development.  Early childhood development must have a focus on Fundamental Movement Skill Development.  Improvements will mainly be made through neural pathway development.  Neural development is your child’s ability to make the mind-body connection which is so important in laying the ground work for continued development and progress.   This is a rapid growth period and physical activity should be almost “play like” with low to no structure.

WHAT HAPPENS AS WE GROW? – FUN-DAMENTALS

Now we’re entering a more steady growth.  While the structure is still relatively low  it is still primarily neuro-muscular, so regularity is still paramount.  Training structure is still low to moderate while endurance and metabolic conditioning can be implemented but with low frequency.  Mental Maturation is starting to play a more important role in your child’s physical abilities.  Children will slowly start to make the mind body connection but we are still a ways away from learning to train.  However, we are starting to see the first signs of trainability and simple rules for safety and games can slowly start being introduced.

WHAT HAPPENS AS WE GROW? – LEARN TO TRAIN

Pre-Adolescent should continue to focus on motor skill development.  Trainability is in full effect and motor learning in both males and females.  Training is largely based on individual’s mental maturation and their ability focus on the mind body connection. Introduction to strength training MOVEMENTS can now be implemented slowly and effectively based on our child reaching developmental benchmarks.  We see slight improvements in muscle hypertrophy and should start to implement agility, speed, and power. Training focus intensifies with moderate to high training structure.
